This competition was introduced in 1973, by the Geelong Gem & Mineral Club Inc., to provide a vehicle, whereby lapidaries from all parts of the world could, by an exchange of ideas, and a comparison of methods, improve their artistic ability and skill.

That this idea has been proved successful can be seen from a study of competition records and results.

The competition is for Standard Cabochon, i.e. a stone of circular or oval outline shape when viewed from the top, having a symmetrically curved, domed top, the height of which must not exceed 50% of the shortest axis, or diameter of the stone, and must be the competitors own work.

The competition is open to all lapidaries from all parts of the world, it is limited to one entry per person, it is judged by judges appointed by the Victorian Gem Clubs Association, according to the rules formulated by the Australian Federation of Lapidary & Allied Crafts, for Standard Cabochon (aesthetic appeal).

The competition is run during the Clubs Annual Exhibition held in November each year. Stones and entry forms must be received by the Competition Secretary not later than September 30th.
