An Unexpected Adventure

During our travels we met two members of the Lismore Gem Club (NSW), Neil & Vicky with whom we shared our common interest and a passion to pick up a few rock samples along the way. Driving to Carnarvon we received a phone call from Neil “where are you?” After determining that we would be in the same place, Carnarvon for a week we managed to enjoy a happy hour or two and exchange notes.

Travelling from Point Sampson to Port Hedland, refuelling and then moving south along the Port Hedland-Newman Rd, we decided to camp at Auski roadhouse as they have a reasonable bush Caravan Park at the rear. This gave us a good secure point to investigate Wittenoom, the home of Blue Asbestos. Wittenoon, the township, is derelict, no water or electricity & no back up services of any kind. The Western Australian government has been trying to shut the town down for years. As far as we could see there were still a couple of residents, but generally everything is in a state of disrepair and is falling to bits

Marvellous Marble Bar

Marble Bar is 200km from the Highway and is a small outback town that takes its name from the Marble Bar. The spectacular red, white and blue/black striped rock (locally known as the “Bar” was named by early pastoralists because they thought it was marble and because it blocked the flow of the Coongan River.

Miles to Miles

Miles, Queensland was first known as Dogwood Crossing but was renamed after William Miles, a local station owner and Member of Parliament in 1878. Miles is now the commercial centre of the Western Darling Downs. It is located at the crossroads of the Leichardt Highway, 219km Nth of Goondiwindi and the Warrego Highway 45km from Chinchilla.
