Geelong Gem and Mineral Club - Activities
Meetings are held on the 2nd. Tuesday of each month, commencing at 8.00pm at the clubrooms, Carey Street. Hamlyn Heights, Geelong 3215 VIC Australia.
We usually have talks, films and demonstrations and other activities related to our interests.
Field Trips and Excursions
We aim to hold one of these each month, this depends on the availability of areas to fossick, excursion venues of interest, weather conditions and general interest within the club. These are normally arranged within daily travel distances.
Advice is available for beginner fossickers on how to use equipment and what to look for.
Occasional camping trips can be arranged to places of interest, and group bookings made for the weekends of the Victorian Gemkhana and the National GEMBOREE.
The club has a well equipped workshop that caters for general cabochon cutting, opal cutting, faceting, silverwork, lost wax casting & beading and enamelling.
Training programs for beginners in cabochon, faceting, silver work, enamelling and casting are held on weekends as the need arises. This time is set aside for trainees, and numbers are restricted to ensure individual attention. Members wishing to undertake a course need to complete a Training Enrolment Form available at the clubrooms.
A fee is charged for each training program.
Varied social activities are arranged, some for members and families, others for friends as well.
The club holds a two day public exhibition annually, which is one of our most important activities. The show displays our lapidary work and specimens, and includes showcase competitions, demonstrations, trade stalls, jewellery sales and general fund raising activities.
Club members are encouraged to enter their work in competitions at our exhibition, and other lapidary club and association competitions. Members of our club have traditionally achieved a high level of success in all sections. The GEMINI International Cabochon Competition is run by our club in conjunction with our exhibition, and attracts entries from around the world.
